The
Facility
The
Farmer’s Kitchen will establish a permanent site and
processing facility for the highly successful Hollywood
Farmers’ Market. In a retail space adjacent to the Hollywood
Farmers’ Market, the Kitchen will be strategically
located at the southeast corner of Selma Avenue and Morningside
Court in the new Sunset and Vine development.
Retail
Kitchen
The Farmer’s
Kitchen café and retail space will invite patrons to
linger and explore a variety of farm-fresh products. Both
fresh and processed foods made with local produce from SEE-LA’s
farmers’ markets will be available for purchase, creating
a stimulating environment for culinary exchange.
Processing/Educational
Kitchen
In the evening after
the close of retail operations, the Farmer’s Kitchen
will be used for teaching, training, and small-scale processing
through SEE-LA’s
programs. Equipment for processing will include range-top
pressure canners, small batch dehydrators, a juicer and a
fryer.
Architectural
Design
The Farmer's Kitchen
was designed by Urban
Studio, an L.A. design practice that specializes in the
architecture of urban design shaped by the dynamics of everyday
life. They overcame the particular challenges of an extremely
small and irregularly shaped space with a beautiful design
that fits the maximum equipment and functionality into an
extremely efficient work area and an attractive and inviting
retail and dining section. Special recognition goes to John
Kaliski, AIA, and Dallas Bankston, senior designer, for the
beautiful design and their commitment to the project and perseverence
through many delays and setbacks.
Construction
The kitchen was
constructed by Pinnacle
Contracting, an L.A. general contractor specializing in
commercial construction. They, too, responded to the unique
challenges of the project, with creativity and ingenuity,
to actualize an architectural design that utilizes every inch
of space. Special recognition goes to Susan Berson, project manager,
for her commitment and perseverence and her creativity in
overcoming some extremely challenging obstacles.
